Pocket guide introducing modernized Fremont/Newark bus service now widely available throughout Southern Alameda County

Press Releases
12/01/2000

(Oakland, CA) A handy pocket-size Fremont/Newark Transit Guide now in distribution illustrates the details of the streamlined new bus service network AC Transit will introduce in Southern Alameda County beginning Sunday, December 17th. The bus system’s extensive service modernization program creates an entirely new route network structured to better serve current and projected travel demand in south county. Most local routes now serving Fremont and Newark are realigned in this program, shifting buses from residential streets onto principal thoroughfares in a new grid pattern that improves area coverage and shortens trip times. Service also is introduce in new neighborhoods and at employment centers unserved until now. At the same time, AC Transit is adding 50% more hours of service in Fremont and Newark, improving weekday schedules to provide bus trips every 30 minutes during peak commute periods throughout the basic network and extending service until at least after 9:00 p.m. in the evening. On weekends, most bus lines also get more frequent 30-minute (rather than 60) intervals between buses. Augmenting the new basic routes in Fremont and Newark, AC Transit operates special commute-hour LINX Commuter Service, designed with input from local civic leaders and businesses specifically to connect regional commuter rail service with employment centers. AC Transit is also realigning many of the specially-designed supplementary service routes tailored to meet school-day travel demand. The new route network offers more direct cross-town service to South County traffic generators and transit transfer centers. To make connections easier, familiar transit hubs like the BART stations are being augmented with the addition of new transfer centers at places like Ohlone College, Lido Faire Shopping Center and NewPark Mall. The entire improved service network is summarized in the pocket-size Fremont/Newark Transit Guide widely available in South County.
