(Oakland, CA) An AC Transit proposal to provide direct bus connections between two regional transit centers and the industrial areas of west and southwest Hayward will be the subject of two public meetings scheduled for March 8th and 13th. This new bus route would greatly improve transit access to fast-growing Hayward industrial parks west of Interstate 880. Employment sites along the proposed route include high-tech businesses, light and heavy industrial concerns, service-industry firms, and the Southland Shopping Center, home to many retailers. The route would link these businesses and commercial concerns directly with regional transit connections at both the Hayward and South Hayward BART stations. Additionally, AC Transit proposes to tailor this route specifically to serve Hayward neighborhoods with significant numbers of CalWORKS (California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids) households, providing them direct access to employment opportunities and regional transit services. Schedule options being proposed for the new route could provide frequent bus trips during peak weekday commute periods and the service schedules would extend well into late evening hours. This new service would be underwritten, in its first two years, by funding from the regional Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s Low Income Flexible Transportation (LIFT) program, with additional support from AC Transit and Alameda County’s Social Services Agency. Public meetings at which details of the bus service proposal will be aired are scheduled for 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday (March 8 ) at the Eden Youth and Family Center, 680 West Tennyson Road in Hayward, and 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday (March 13) at the Hayward Senior Center, 22325 North Third Street in Hayward.
