(Oakland, CA) A proposed increase in bus service linking industrial employment in west and southwest Hayward with two regional transit centers is the subject of a public hearing AC Transit has scheduled for 6:00 p.m., Thursday (April 5) in Hayward. The proposed new bus line, along with changes in current Line 86 service, would improve transit access to employment sites west of Interstate 880, including many high-tech companies, heavy and light industrial concerns, service-industries and the Southland Shopping Center, which is home to many retailers. The new bus route, called Line 83, would operate via West A Street, Hesperian Boulevard, West Winton Avenue, Clawiter Road, Investment Boulevard, Corporate Avenue, Arden Road, Industrial Boulevard and Tennyson Road connecting the downtown Hayward and South Hayward BART stations. Concurrently, the proposal would reroute Line 86 via West Winton Avenue, Cabot, Investment and Industrial boulevards, and Tennyson Road – discontinuing the lightly-patronized route segments now operated on Depot Road between Industrial and Hesperian Boulevards, on Industrial between Depot and Clawiter Road, and on Jackson Street between Hesperian and downtown Hayward. (No change is proposed for current Line 386 weekend service.) AC Transit proposes to tailor the bus routes specifically to serve Hayward neighborhoods with significant numbers of CalWORKS (California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids) households, providing them with direct access to employment opportunities and regional transit services. The proposed schedules could provide more frequent trips during peak weekday commute periods and service schedules could extend into late evening hours. This new bus service would be underwritten, in its first two years, by funding from the regional Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s Low Income Flexible Transportation (LIFT) program, with additional support from Alameda County’s Social Services Agency. AC Transit Directors will convene the Public Hearing on the service proposals at 6:00 p.m. Thursday (April 5) in the Chabot College Board Room (Rm. 200 in Building 200) on the campus at 25555 Hesperian Boulevard. The Directors have scheduled their regular biweekly board meeting to begin in the Hayward facility immediately after the public hearing. The meeting site is served by AC Transit Lines 92 and 97. Interested parties may submit comment on the bus service proposals prior to the public hearing. Facsimiles or E-mail must be received no later than 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, to be provided to the Board for consideration at the public hearing. Address written comment to AC Transit, Planning Department, 1600 Franklin Street, Oakland, CA 94612, send it by facsimile to 510-891-7157 or e-mail to planning@actransit.org.
