AC Transit, Berkeley city officials unveil a new bus stop pole transit information program

Press Releases
06/17/2001

(Oakland, CA) An eye-catching new format that puts transit information right where it”s most needed – at the bus stop – was unveiled Tuesday, June 19, by elected officials from AC Transit and the City of Berkeley. Mayor Shirley Dean and Council members Polly Armstrong and Miriam Hawley joined AC Transit director Joe Wallace (who represents much of Berkeley) and the system staff to reveal the new information display, which provides accurate details about bus service to each specific stop. The display shows days and hours of operation, and scheduled trip times, for buses on each line serving that particular stop. Berkeley officials, and Hawley in particular, worked with a local developer (Panoramic Interests) to allocate funding for this pilot transit info program. The seed money made possible the procurement of information holders that fit AC Transit”s bus stop poles. The route map and schedule display was developed, and is being installed by the East Bay”s bus system. “This project is a wonderful model for public/private sector partnerships can contribute directly to help make Berkeley a true transit-first city,” said Hawley, who served until recently as an AC Transit director. “I”m confident that improved transit information at bus stops will help encourage more people to ride transit.” Following the unveiling ceremony, AC Transit maintenance crews fanned out to complete further installations at test sites along University Avenue and at the downtown Berkeley transit center. The objective now is to gauge customer reaction to this particular bus schedule format, as a prelude to developing further transit information improvements.
