Public input is invited for AC Transit’s sweeping Vision 2010 Plan and the San Pablo Corridor improvement project

Press Releases
09/13/2001

(Oakland, CA) At a series of public meetings, AC Transit’s directors and staff will discuss the District’s “Transit Vision 2010″ Plan, a map of proposed bus service development policies for the long-range planning process, and also some more immediate transit improvement programs. Bus service adjustments for San Pablo Avenue will be one focus of three public meetings, scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and next Tuesday (Sept. 19, 20 and 25). Improvements are already under development to give bus service on the San Pablo Avenue corridor the high performance and attractive amenities of light rail – without incurring the high capital cost of streetcar systems. The distinctive emerald-green, low-floor buses that now serve Line 72 and 73 riders on the avenue are an initial investment in these improvements. The low-floor completely dispenses with steps common to other designs. The low-floor lets passengers step on and off quickly, speeding boarding and reducing time spent idling at bus stops. Future installments include transit stations where passengers may buy prepaid fare tickets – rather than spend time fumbling for cash while boarding. The buses will have a built-in ability to extend green lights at major intersections, minimizing time wasted at red lights. At traffic choke points, bus-only lanes will help keep transit moving. The longer-range “Transit Vision 2010″ plan begins to map out the policies that would govern bus service deployment options to be pursued in the course of the decade to come. In refining the Service Deployment Policies to be spelled out in this working plan, broad public involvement and input is deemed essential. In addition to forums where public comment will be accepted, the bus system is widely distributing a mail-in survey questionnaire that solicits ideas. The survey form, and the entire Transit Vision 2010 document, can be viewed at the District’s Web site: http://www.actransit.org/tv2010/. The public meetings on these planning efforts will be held at 7:00 p.m. on:
  • Wednesday (Sept. 19) at AC Transit’s Board Room, 1600 Franklin Street in downtown Oakland
  • Thursday (Sept. 20) in the Albany City Council Chamber, 100 San Pablo Avenue, Albany
  • Tuesday (Sept. 25) at Maple Hall, San Pablo Civic Center, 13831 San Pablo Avenue, San Pablo.
