As of Monday, January 21, AC Transit will detour three major bus routes and relocate a busy bus stop in downtown Oakland. This is to make way for construction of the city’s transit center and street improvement project. Civic improvements require relocating the bus stop for northbound trips now situated on Broadway at 14th Street in front of Walgreens. Beginning Monday, buses operating northbound on Broadway on Lines 11, 12, 51 /51M and 58 will serve bus stops at 11th and 15th Streets. Northbound Line 72 and 73 buses will serve the stops at 11th Street and Broadway and at 15th Street and Telegraph Avenue, at Latham Square. Berkeley-bound Line 40, 43 and 88 buses will be detoured to operate through City Center via Franklin Street (rather than Broadway) to 15th Street, to Telegraph Avenue and regular route. Northbound Line 40, 43 and 88 buses will serve a new temporary stop at 14th and Franklin Streets, as well as established stops on Telegraph Avenue. During the improvement project’s initial stages, there will be no change in routing or bus stop locations for AC Transit routes operating south and/or east through the 14th and Broadway area. Four years in the making, the improvements will upgrade passenger amenities and transit information displays at some of the busiest bus stops in the District’s extensive route network. Every week day, more than 11,000 passengers board and alight from AC Transit buses in Oakland’s City Center area. When Oakland’s improvement program is completed, downtown will have wider sidewalks, new street furniture, and public art displays.
