Oaklander Selected to Fill AC Board At-Large Seat

News Articles
06/07/2002

Rebecca Kaplan was selected by AC Transit’s board May 30, 2002 to fill the vacant at-large seat on the seven-member policymaking body that governs the bus system serving some 236,000 daily riders throughout the East Bay.

A resident of Oakland’s Fruitvale District, AC Transit’s new board member is a frequent bus rider. She earned her J.D. law degree at Stanford University and has since gained legal experience in working on labor, tenant, civil rights, and environmental cases. Active in civic affairs, Kaplan worked on Alameda County’s Measure B, the local voter-approved transportation tax measure, and as a campaign director at the Bay Area Transportation and Land Use Coalition. Kaplan holds a master’s degree from the Tufts University Department of Urban and Environmental policy, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Oakland resident was selected from among four finalists who sought to fill the board seat vacated by former director Matt Williams, who resigned in April. Kaplan’s seat will be on the ballot again in the November 2002 general election. As one of two at-large AC Transit directors, Kaplan now represents voters residing throughout the public agency’s 390-square-mile East Bay service area.
