Press Releases
07/12/2002

The filing period opens Monday, July 15, for qualified persons interested in serving on the four publicly-elected seats on AC Transit’s policymaking Board of Directors.

Three seats on this year’s ballot represent specific geographic wards in Northern and Southern Alameda County, while the fourth at-large seat represents the entire District. A general election for these seats is on the November 5, 2002 ballot. The seats up for election are:

  • Ward 3-consisting of Alameda, major parts of Oakland (including eastern portions of the Dimond District, Seminary, Melrose, Millsmont, Oak Knoll, Eastmont, Elmhurst and Brookfield Village), and  San Leandro lying of 147th Avenue (between Interstate 580 and the BART tracks) and (west of the BART tracks) Aladdin Avenue
  • Ward 4 -consisting of the remainder of San Leandro, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Ashland and other unincorporated communities, plus the portion of Hayward generally east of Interstate 880
  • Ward 5 -consisting of Fremont, Newark and the portion of Hayward, not in Ward IV
  • At-large -representing the entire District, all 13 cities (excluding Union City), plus adjacent unincorporated areas from Richmond and San Pablo in the north through Fremont in the south

The filing period for election to AC Transit’s seven-member board extends from Monday, July 15, through 5:00pm Friday, August 9, 2002.  If an incumbent does not file for reelection by August 9, the deadline for other candidates to file for that seat will be extended by five days as prescribed by the Election Code.

Candidates for election must be registered voters residing in the area they seek to represent. Eligible candidates may obtain nomination packets from two sources:

  • Alameda County residents, contact the Registrar of Voters, 1225 Fallon Street in Downtown Oakland (510) 272-6973.
  • Contra Costa County residents, contact that county’s Elections Department, 524 Main Street in Martinez (925) 646-4166.
