AC Transit is conducting a systemwide On-Board Rider Profile Survey from early September through mid-November, gathering statistical data that will be used for planning and other purposes in the near and long-term future.
Working with San Francisco State University’s Public Research Institute, AC Transit will place surveyors on board buses throughout the system, and at various times of day and night. The two-page prepared survey form will solicit data about bus passengers, their travel habits and general opinions about transit.
Researchers also will conduct a telephone survey of the East Bay’s general population on AC Transit’s behalf. In a random sampling of households within the bus system’s service area, telephone surveyors will gather general demographic data. They will also gather people’s opinions and insights about bus service.
“The survey is being conducted by a seasoned professional team highly skilled in the study of complex markets – which certainly describes the East Bay AC Transit’s 230,000 daily passengers,” said Tina Konvalinka, Transportation Planning Manager at AC Transit. “The data we gather will be invaluable in understanding our riders and in developing increased ridership.”
During the survey, staff will work on board buses to ensure a high-level of responses. Printed (and telephone) survey instruments will be available in Chinese and Spanish. Other formats will be available in assisting those with visual impairments to complete the on-board survey.
AC Transit anticipates that analysis of the data will take approximately 12 months following completion of this survey, the first AC Transit effort to collect systemwide data on riders and non-riders since the early 1990s.
