New bus shelters create safe and comfortable waiting areas for AC Transit riders, and protect them from various weather conditions.
There are nearly 250 shelters currently installed throughout Alameda County in the cities of Albany, Berkeley, Fremont, Hayward, Newark, and San Leandro and in the unincorporated Areas of Alameda County.
The shelters are located at major bus stops or at important destinations such as libraries, community centers, employment centers, shopping centers, hospitals, and downtown areas. Shelters have been well received by various jurisdictions, bus riders, and the general public.
In addition, Lamar Transit Advertising, the bus shelter contractor for AC Transit, is keeping the shelters in a first rate condition. Thus far, the main concern over the bus shelters has been, “When will we get more?”
By the end of 2003, AC Transit anticipates that Lamar will install up to 100 more shelters throughout Alameda County. In addition, as part of the AC Transit San Pablo Rapid Bus Project, Lamar will install 27 custom-designed shelters for each of the Rapid Bus stops along San Pablo Avenue from 40th Street in Emeryville to Contra Costa College. These shelters will be designed not only for safety and comfort, but also to help the public recognize the San Pablo Rapid Bus service.
Following completion of these two projects, Lamar has agreed to install an additional 100 to 150 bus shelters throughout Contra Costa County and the City of Alameda. AC Transit is currently working with these additional jurisdictions to gain approval for bus shelter installations. AC Transit also will work with the jurisdictions and Lamar to determine appropriate locations for these shelters.
