Park & Ride for Free to San Francisco

Press Releases
04/01/2005

AC Transit proudly announces a new service to San Francisco that will allow morning commuters to park and ride to the Transbay Terminal for free for the entire month of April. The service coincides with the opening of a new Caltrans “Park & Ride” lot that will provide 252 new parking spaces on Market Street, between 5th and 6th streets, just beneath the Interstate 880 freeway in West Oakland.

Beginning Monday, April 4th, AC Transit’s Line W will serve the lot with eight morning trips every weekday into the Transbay Terminal at First and Mission streets in downtown San Francisco.  Line W service will run every 30 minutes during commuter hours– between approx. 6:15am and 8:35am– and will arrive in San Francisco in under 20 minutes. Westbound morning passengers can board the bus on 6th Street at Market and, during the month of April ride free to San Francisco, avoiding what would otherwise be a $3 fare.

Along with the parking spaces, the lot will also have 10 bicycle lockers available for public use.

“Free is always good,” said Aram Boyd, Senior Marketing representative for AC Transit. “But the main thing is that this gives people a chance to get off that Bay Bridge and have a quick, comfortable way to get to the city.”

Return bus service from the Transbay Terminal to the Park & Ride lot will be available on either AC Transit Line W or Line O, together running at 10-minute intervals during evening commutes– from 4pm to 7pm. In total, there will be 48 return trips to the lot daily between 6am and midnight with service every 20 minutes or less. The regular AC Transit transbay fare of $3 will be in effect for return commutes from San Francisco to the Park & Ride lot.
