UC Berkeley Wants to Fill a Bus With Food on Saturday

News Articles
09/24/2008

With the support of AC Transit, the UC Berkeley ASUC Auxiliary and The Daily Californian, in conjunction with Cal Athletics, are hosting a Harvest Festival carnival and Food Drive before the Cal Bears home game on Saturday.

An AC Transit bus will be parked, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Student Union and Sproul Plazas (located at Bancroft and Telegraph). Cal fans, along with our entire local community, are encouraged to bring canned and packaged food items to campus, in an effort to fill the 30 foot bus with donated food. All donations will benefit Alameda County residents at risk for experiencing hunger.

Prizes, which will be awarded to the individuals and group bringing the most donated food, include an I-pod and $100 gift certificates donated by local businesses. Saturday’s event will include live music and other fun.

You can opt to donate cans of food in advance, this Thursday and Friday. Donation boxes will be available 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the main lobby of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union (2475 Bancroft Way, a stop on the 1, 1R, 51, 7, 52, and F routes).  Donations made in advance will also be placed on the bus on Saturday.

The event benefits the Alameda County Community Food Bank, and Berkeley Housing and Food, which help thousands of needy individuals locally. Recent  US Census Bureau data showed that approximately 340,000 residents in Alameda County are low-income and at risk of going hungry. Let’s fill the bus!
