Board To Consider New Fare Policy and Increases

News Articles
05/09/2011

The AC Transit Board of Directors will meet Wednesday, May 11th to consider a proposed new fare structure and a possible fare increase for this fall. The meeting will be held at AC Transit headquarters, 1600 Franklin Street in downtown Oakland.

The changes proposed for AC Transit and Dumbarton Express riders would lead to more logical and equitable fares and pass prices, predictable fare increases over a ten-year period, creation of a seven-day bus pass, and possible changes to the transfer policy.

Additionally, the Directors will consider a resolution that would increase fares on August 1, 2011, raising the basic adult fare from $2 to $2.10 and basic fares for youths, seniors and the disabled from $1 to $1.05.

“Before bringing these proposals forward, the District conducted extensive outreach among bus riders, students, commuters and other interested people to make them aware of the potential for upcoming changes and to hear their reactions to different options for a fare policy,” said Interim General Manager Mary King. “We’re left with few other choices given the volatility of current funding sources. “We have to consider fare increases, and the proposed structure will result in at least one source of predictable revenue for AC Transit.”
