Back-To-School With Clipper Card Made Easy

Press Releases
09/08/2011

To make the Clipper Youth card more accessible to school students, AC Transit has extended its downtown Customer Service hours and is holding a series of neighborhood events to make registration more convenient for youths.

Like backpacks, notebooks and pencils, the Clipper Youth card is a necessary back-to-school item for many students because it is the only way to obtain an AC Transit 31-Day Youth pass. With the $20 pass, students are allowed an unlimited number of rides for 31 days. Otherwise, they must pay $1.05 cash fares each time they board the bus.

Aside from the savings, the cards are personalized with students’ photos and names. If lost or stolen, the cards are replaceable, giving both parents and students the peace of mind of not having to carry cash or fumble for exact change in order to board the bus.

To make the cards more easily available, AC Transit will hold a series of community registration events specifically for youths in Albany, Berkeley, Hayward and Newark. At a similar event in Richmond a week ago, more than 150 students registered for the transit card.

AC Transit will also extend ticket office hours in downtown Oakland on August 29th, 30th and 31st. On those days the office will close at 8:00 pm instead of 5:00 pm.

To be eligible for a Clipper Youth card, applicants must be 5 to18 years of age, and offer a birth certificate or valid documents to prove it.

A complete schedule of the Clipper Youth card events, including times and places (see below), is available online at www.actransit.org
