After another full day of mediation, a labor deal moved closer to fruition between AC Transit and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 192, which represents bus operators and mechanics.
Most notably, on the key issues of wages and health care, the distance between the two parties has narrowed substantially. On wages, AC Transit is proposing a nine percent (9%) wage increase over the life of a three contract while the ATU now seeks a nine point seventy-five percent (9.75%) wage increase over the same period of time.
On the more sticky matter of ATU employees making contributions toward health care costs, there is only a ten dollar ($10.00) difference between the two parties. Both the District and ATU agree on monthly contributions of $70 and $180, respectively, for the first and third years of the contract. However, during the second year of the contract, AC Transit is hoping for $145 monthly contribution while the union is offering a $135 monthly payment.
Despite a threatened strike by bus operators at 12:01 AM Wednesday, the mediation process is continuing, progress is steady, and the District is optimistic that a disruption in bus service can be averted.
