AC TRANSIT ADVISES OF SERVICE CHANGES & DELAYS DUE TO WARRIORS VICTORY PARADE

Press Releases
06/08/2018

The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) wishes to congratulate the 2018 NBA World Champion Golden State Warriors. The Warriors organization, in concert with the City of Oakland, have planned a celebration parade on Tuesday, June 12. AC Transit riders will be inconvenienced the day before and during this daylong celebration. However, we have taken a series of steps to develop a service plan that will keep buses running despite the closure of several streets in downtown Oakland.

Parade Route
The parade begins on Broadway at 11th Street at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12th: then proceeds north up Broadway before turning right on 20th Street; then right on Harrison Street; left on to 19th Street; then right onto Lakeside Drive, ending on Oak and 13th Street.

Street Closures and Detours
Street closures will significantly affect transit service in the areas bordered by Grand Avenue to the north; Martin Luther King, Jr. Way to the west; 8th Street to the south; and Lakeshore Avenue to the east. The parade and large crowds will mean that most of the day there will be street closures and AC Transit bus reroutes around downtown Oakland. Lines 1, 6, 12, 14, 18, 19, 20, 29, 33, 40, 51A, 62, 72, 72M, 72R, 88, 96, NL, 300, 314, Broadway Shuttle and All-Nighter lines 800, 801 and 840 will be detoured. In an effort to minimize disruptions, we have devised a series of parade reroutes – each will activate in three separately timed phases.

Phase One Reroutes, Day before the parade (11th Street and Jefferson Street closed)

Line 1 (northbound & southbound) Monday, June 11 at 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. day of the parade

Temporary Transit Center at Castro Street
Since many AC Transit bus lines start, transfer, or end service in downtown Oakland, we will install a Temporary Transit Center at Castro Street between 12th and 17th Streets. Downtown Oakland riders requiring transportation to the Castro Temporary Transit Center should look for the Broadway Shuttle Buses. This free service will transport riders from the Castro Street Temporary Transit Center along 14th Street, Clay Street and 12th Street. The Shuttle will serve the stop at 12th and Clay Streets. The map below highlights the bus lines serviced by the Castro Street Temporary Transit Center and the locations of temporary bus stops.

AC Transit ambassadors will be deployed throughout downtown and uptown Oakland and Lake Merritt to help guide residents and visitors to appropriate bus stop locations. Additionally, AC Transit ambassadors will be distributing flyers with critical information regarding temporary reroutes and the affected bus lines.

Riders and motorist alike are advised, that the conclusion of the parade may not automatically signal the restoration of all road service. Clean-up efforts by the Oakland’s Department of Public Works is required and may delay service restoration.

An AC Transit low emission hybrid electric bus will have a featured position in the parade. Walking alongside that coach will be AC Transit’s team of champions. These employees represent the very backbone of AC Transit: Operators, Mechanics, and Maintenance staff. All 35 employees, participating in the championship parade, have a demonstrated record of exceptional safety to our riders.
