AC Transit Service Updates Related to COVID-19
News Articles
04/17/2020
AC Transit is committed to serve riders who rely on public transit to conduct essential business and access vital resources such as healthcare. As a result, we will continue to provide regular service except for supplemental service to schools. Should the need arise, we will implement modified service.
Since this is a rapidly evolving situation, we continue to monitor the developments daily and communicate with customers and staff about proactive measures and best practices during the current public health crisis.
The safety of our customers and staff is our top priority. Although we continue with regular service at this time, we are making important changes that follow guidance provided by Public Health Officials.
The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) is committed to protecting the health, safety, and well-being of our passengers and employees. As a result, we will operate with lower rider thresholds in order to follow social distancing guidance and avoid overcrowding. If a bus nears capacity, our operators may bypass stops and turn on the “Drop-Off Only” head-sign. Riders on board can continue to exit buses at their requested stop.
As a result, AC Transit directly appeals to our riders and communities, to partner with us in maintaining the following passenger thresholds:
30’ feeder coach – 6 passengers; 40’ standard coach – 10 passengers; 60’ articulated coach – 16 passengers, and; 44’ double decker coach – 24 passengers.
We appeal to our riders and our community to partner with us in observing passenger thresholds. We continue to monitor capacity on our fleet daily. We are prepared to make changes as needed and when additional resources become available. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience.
In addition to social distancing, we encourage riders to wear a mask on board, covering the nose and mouth, effective immediately. Please help protect our staff, families and loved ones by minimizing trips and reserve transit for essential business. Thank you.

AC Transit is implementing rear-door boarding on buses with multiple doors. Fare payment is not required until further notice.
Passengers requiring ADA ramps, utilizing mobility devices or need priority seating may continue to use the front door for boarding. Wheelchair riders may be allowed onboard without securements by bus operators.
While operating, we are committed to the collective well-being and health of our riders and employees. This includes following social distancing measures. Customers are strongly encouraged to stay or sit 6-feet from other passengers and the bus operator when boarding, exiting and riding the bus.
School districts in the AC Transit service area are offering free lunches to anyone 18 or younger while the statewide shelter-in-place order is in effect. Many participating school sites are accessible by AC Transit, and the maps below can help you determine which bus line is the most convenient for you and your child.

We recommend you continue to follow guidance from the California Department of Public Health. Please observe the following:
- Protect your and our collective health by practicing social distancing. Maintain six feet space from fellow passengers and the operator.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water. Read more here.
- Cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue or cover your mouth with your elbow.
- Clean and disinfect commonly touched surface – like cell phones and computers.
- Stay home if you are sick.
For more information, including guidance documents, please visit the website the CDPH website.
We have increased our cleaning practices by sanitizing all coaches at the close of daily service. Commonly touched surfaces such as handrails, seats, and fareboxes are being cleaned daily with detergent and disinfected with a bleach-based solution.
For more information on our enhanced engineering controls, press read our Press Release.
The Alameda County Public Health Official Order issued on March 16 identifies Public Works Construction, Roads & Highways as “Essential Infrastructure.” Construction activities on the BRT project are exempt from the shelter-in-place order as long as social distancing requirements are maintained and follow orders issues by public health officials. With this exemption construction projects will proceed as scheduled.
Along with additional safety and cleaning measures introduced in the past few weeks, AC Transit is providing Personal Protective Equipment – including gloves, masks, and hand sanitizer – to staff for voluntary use.
