Discounted Passes on Clipper

AC Transit’s Adult, Youth, and Senior/Disabled passes offer you the best value for your money and are available only on Clipper. With a pass on Clipper, you can save big when you ride a lot, and you don’t need to carry exact change to get on the bus. AC Transit passes are only recognized on AC Transit buses, but if you use other transit systems as well, you can also add other agency passes or cash value to your card. Clipper automatically recognizes transfers between AC Transit buses, as well as between AC Transit and other transit agencies that accept Clipper.

To learn more about getting and using your pass on a Clipper card, select your fare category:

- Adult 31-Day Pass
- Youth 31-Day Pass
- Senior/Disabled Monthly Pass

Adult 31-Day Pass (Age 19-64)

An Adult Local 31-Day Pass allows you to ride local bus lines in the East Bay an unlimited number of times during a 31-day period. An Adult Transbay 31-Day Pass gives you unlimited local trips, as well as unlimited trips across the Bay. Both passes require an Adult Clipper card.

  • Get your Adult Clipper card at any Clipper retail location, including most Walgreens stores; at the AC Transit & Clipper Customer Service Center or other participating transit agency sales offices; online; or by phone  (877) 878-8883.
  • Beginning September 1, 2012, a new Adult Clipper card costs $3. Click here for details.
  • Load cash and/or an Adult Local or Transbay 31-Day Pass to your card at any retail location, including most Walgreens stores; at AC Transit or other participating transit agency sales offices;  at some Clipper Add Value Machines (Those at BART stations allow you to add cash value only); online; or by phone at (877) 878-8883. The locations of participating transit agency sales offices and Add Value Machines are listed alongside retail locations.

Youth 31-Day Pass (Age 5-18)

The Youth Local 31-Day Pass allows youths between five and 18 to ride local bus lines in the East Bay an unlimited number of times during a 31-day period. This pass is only available on a free, personalized Youth Clipper card and requires that youths apply for the card in person at the AC Transit & Clipper Customer Service Center in downtown Oakland.

  • Obtain an application by visiting AC Transit or by calling AC Transit at (510) 891-4706, or by downloading the online application.
  • Bring the completed application, along with proof of age (a birth certificate, passport, military dependent card, or alien registration card), to the ticket office, and have your photo taken by staff at the AC Transit & Clipper Customer Service Center. Your personalized Youth Clipper card will be mailed to you within 14 days.
  • Load cash and/or a Youth 31-Day Pass to your card at any retail location, including most Walgreens stores; at the AC Transit & Clipper Customer Service Center or other participating transit agency sales offices; at some Clipper Add Value Machines (Those at BART stations allow you to add cash value only); online; or by phone at (877) 878-8883. The locations of participating transit agency sales offices and Add Value Machines are listed alongside retail locations.

Senior/Disabled Monthly Pass (Age 65+ and persons with disabilities)

The Senior/Disabled Local Monthly Pass allows persons with disabilities and passengers age 65 or older to ride local bus lines in the East Bay an unlimited number of times during a one-month period.

This pass is available on two different types of Clipper cards:  a Senior Clipper card, and a Regional Transit Connection (RTC) Clipper card. Most seniors can use a non-personalized Senior Clipper card. Disabled passengers, and some seniors*, are required to use a personalized RTC Clipper card.

To get a Senior Clipper card:

  • Obtain an application at select locations, including the AC Transit & Clipper Customer Service Center in downtown Oakland. You can also call AC Transit at (510) 891-4706 (TDD 510-428-2266), or download the online application. You will need to apply in person, with proof of age documentation. A Senior Clipper card is free, and you will receive your card right away.
  • Load cash and/or an AC Transit Senior/Disabled monthly pass on your Senior Clipper card at any Clipper retail location, including most Walgreens stores; at AC Transit or other  participating transit agency sales offices; at some Clipper Add Value Machines (Those at BART stations allow you to add cash value only); online; or by phone at (877) 878-8883. The locations of participating transit agency sales offices and Add Value Machines are listed alongside retail locations.

To get an RTC Clipper card:

  • Obtain an application at select locations, including the AC Transit & Clipper Customer Service Center in downtown Oakland. You can also call AC Transit at (510) 891-4706 (TDD 510-428-2266), or download the online application. Bring the completed application, along with proof of eligibility, to any of the select transit agency sales offices, pay the $3 RTC application fee, and have your photo taken. Your RTC Clipper card will be mailed to you within 14 days.
  • If you prefer using a Senior/Disabled Monthly Pass sticker, it is available at many retailers. The sticker is placed directly on the face of the RTC Clipper Card, and is valid only when affixed to the card. To use it on the bus, simply show the driver your card rather than tagging it on the Clipper device.
  • The hours during which you can apply for a RTC Clipper card at the AC Transit & Clipper Customer Service Center are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Load cash and/or an AC Transit Senior/Disabled monthly pass on your RTC Clipper card at any Clipper retail location, including most Walgreens stores; at AC Transit or other  participating transit agency sales offices; at some Clipper Add Value Machines (Those at BART stations allow you to add cash value only); online; or by phone at (877) 878-8883. The locations of participating transit agency sales offices and Add Value Machines are listed alongside retail locations.

Using Your Clipper Card on Other Transit Agencies

Clipper is also acceped on BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit and Ferry, Muni, SamTrans, and VTA. To board these other transit agencies using your Clipper card, you must have cash value on your card or a discount/multi-ride pass for that agency. Clipper automatically recognizes the difference between agency passes and will only use the pass specific to the agency vehicle you are boarding.  If you do not have a pass specific to the agency you are riding, it will use cash value to deduct the fare payment.

For more about passes and discounted fares on Clipper, including details about the RTC card, visit clippercard.com.

*If you are a senior who requires an attendant on transit, you and your attendant must both have personalized RTC cards in order for the attendant to pay the reduced fare.  Also, if you use other transit agencies that do not accept Clipper,  you must have an RTC card to be eligible for the discount fare applicable to that agency.
