Education

Mobile Learning Centers

AC Transit takes education and outreach seriously. Our fuel cell buses carry no advertising. Instead, these zero-emission buses serve as mobile learning centers, bringing educational messages about fuel cells directly to the hundreds of thousands of people who ride AC Transit every day. On-board exhibits explain the energy pathway as hydrogen is transformed into electricity and then joined with oxygen to form water vapor as the only exhaust. Panel displays answer a dozen frequently asked questions and take a “whole systems” look at the complex energy and transportation system, presenting fuel cells as one potential part of the solution.

High School Science Curriculum (HyTec)

In partnership with Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley and the Schatz Energy Research Center at Humboldt State University, AC Transit has developed a two-week science education curriculum for high school chemistry, physics, and environmental science classrooms around the country. Over 300 teachers participated in the development phase of the program, which is now available nationally. This inquiry-based, issue-oriented curriculum gives students hands-on experience building, testing, and using fuel cells to generate electricity and addresses a number of National Science Education Standards. First Responder Training

In addition to the ongoing training of our own staff, we offer training to first responders, providing the specific information they need to be prepared for any possible event. AC Transit provides this service in person, on site, and has also produced a DVD explaining safety procedures and best practices for first responders. Over 700 East Bay first responders have already gone through this training.

Facility Tours

AC Transit’s program has attracted worldwide attention. Dignitaries from all levels of government and industry from four continents have toured our fueling and maintenance facilities with an eye toward replicating our successes at other sites.

To inquire about facility tours for your company or organization, please call (510) 891-7245 or email fuelcell@actransit.org.
