Urban Planning

When new commercial or housing developments are designed with public transit in mind, the transit ridership base goes up while the need for personal cars goes down. This benefits us all with less pollution, less traffic congestion, and more livable, walkable neighborhoods.

AC Transit works with local governments and communities to promote and maximize public transit in land use developments. Our participation ranges from reviewing proposals for transit villages to developing local transportation plans. AC Transit has recently taken part in planning the following projects:

  • Richmond Parkway Transit Center
  • Richmond BART Transit Village
  • Emeryville (Amtrak) Transit Center
  • Union City Intermodal Station
  • BART extension to Santa Clara
  • Oakland Pedestrian Plan
  • Downtown Oakland Transportation/Circulation Study
  • Alameda Transit Study\
  • New Transbay Terminal
  • Central Alameda County Transportation Study
  • the Fruitvale BART Transit Village

AC Transit works hard to get its voice heard in local governments' planning processes.
To that end, AC Transit has written the manual "Designing With Transit" for use by local and regional governments. "Designing With Transit" serves as a toolbox for community agencies working to make their main streets more vital and pedestrian-friendly.
