New Transbay Terminal

Almost 70 years old, with major structural, accessibility and capacity deficiencies, the Transbay Terminal serves a vital role as the “one-stop” location for AC Transit Transbay buses arriving and departing San Francisco. For more than five years, AC Transit has worked with partner agencies in San Francisco and on the Peninsula to rebuild this aging structure into a modern and attractive multimodal facility that would serve more than 100,000 passengers a day on Transbay buses, Muni, intercity buses and Caltrain and ultimately California High Speed Rail services. A new entity, the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, which includes AC Transit as a member agency, has jurisdiction over the project. Construction is expected to begin in 2008 with completion five years later.

Funding Source
Funding is provided by voter approved Regional Measure 2, which raised bridge tolls by $1, and funded a number of projects. RM2 includes $150 million the Transbay Terminal project – additional funds are anticipated from the sales of adjacent Caltrans properties, redevelopment funds, and the San Francisco transportation sales tax.
