How TransLink Works

You can load and store value on your card in two ways:

  • E-cash (electronic cash): Works just like cash on participating transit agencies' vehicles. The fare for each trip is deducted from your e-cash balance. (The most e-cash you can add at a time is $250, and the most you can store on your card is $300.)
  • Transit Pass: You can load a pass directly onto your card. Once a transit pass is stored on your card, you can use it instead of a sticker or a paper pass. If you like, you can load a combination of a pass, and additional e-cash.

To add value in person, either use a self-serve Add Value Machine located in select transit stations, including AC Transit's two ticket offices - in downtown Oakland and at the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco—or stop at any participating retail location.

You can also add value online, or by calling TransLink Customer Service, or by setting up AutoLoad.

The Autoload feature allows you to pre-authorize a direct, secure transfer of funds from a credit card or bank account that will be added to your TransLink card in the form of e-cash or a transit pass. Whenever your e-cash balance falls below $10 or your pass expires, the pre-set value will be automatically added to your card. If you set up Autoload at the time that you order a card, TransLink will waive the $5 cost to buy a card.
