AC TRANSIT BOARD OF DIRECTORS REACHES HISTORIC REDISTRICTING DECISION

December 14,2023

The all-new ward map and election sequence will begin in November 2024

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) Board of Directors has completed the redistricting process, moving from its existing configuration of two At-large and five Ward seats to the first-ever seven-ward election system. The decision was reached during the final Board meeting of the year on December 13, marking a historic transition in policymaking for the transit district.

This vote comes after a thorough public engagement process that involved numerous public hearings and workshops. The community’s input ultimately led the Board to deliberate on two draft ward maps, Plan Evergreen, and Plan Jade, in addition to consideration of two election sequencing options for 2024 and 2026.

The following seven-ward map and election cycle were officially approved:

  • Plan Jade
  • Wards 1, 2, and 6 voting in 2024; Wards 3, 4, 5, and 7 in 2026

The goal of redistricting was to create a balanced and inclusive electoral map, providing each ward with a distinct identity and opportunity on the Board. As AC Transit's Board transitions to its new seven-ward election system, each of the seven elected Board Directors will represent a more condensed ward of residents that aims to better mirror the diverse communities served by AC Transit.
