ONE EAST BAY: A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITIES THAT DEPEND ON US
AC Transit renews its focus on serving riders across the East Bay
OAKLAND, Calif. – The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) is beginning this fiscal year with a renewed commitment to the East Bay communities that have placed their trust in our service for more than 65 years. A new year is a new opportunity to set clear priorities, strengthen accountability, and reaffirm our responsibility to the cities and unincorporated communities that rely on our buses every day.
This new year, AC Transit is sharpening our focus with the introduction of the first-of-its-kind “One East Bay. One AC Transit.”
“Recent reports confirm what we already knew: most of our riders depend on us, and we take that responsibility seriously. With one car or no car at home, many riders rely on AC Transit for trips to work, school, health care, and daily life. For 65 percent of our riders who are transit-dependent, protecting this bus network matters more than ever,” said General Manager Salvador Llamas.
One East Bay is more than an initiative, it’s a renewed commitment rooted in four bedrock priorities that have defined AC Transit for more than 65 years: Safe and Reliable Service, Delivering on Our Commitments, Connecting Communities, and Supporting the East Bay Economy.
Each priority is a year-round commitment that will guide how AC Transit serves our riders and ultimately measures our success. The timing of this campaign is especially meaningful because it aligns with compelling data about who is riding transit.
In fact, three out of four AC Transit riders are people of color, and nearly two-thirds are low-income. Those numbers reflect the essential role AC Transit plays across the East Bay, and the responsibility that comes with serving communities that depend on our bus network.
One East Bay is designed to reach across the full scope of our operations. From the Bus Operators safely navigating roads, to the mechanics who keep our fleet in optimal condition, to the teams cleaning buses – sometimes in the middle of a route – to the planners shaping service, the technology teams driving digital innovation, and the employees supporting AC Transit behind the scenes, this commitment is built to create a collective lift across the entire transit district.
AC Transit is already Delivering on Our Commitments through a growing portfolio of Quick Build projects that are improving transit reliability and safety across the East Bay.
Working in partnerships with agencies including the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Alameda County Transportation Commission, and California Department of Transportation, AC Transit is investing in practical, high-impact improvements such as transit signal priority, upgraded bus stops, new sidewalks, and dedicated bus only lanes that have made some of the East Bay’s most congested corridors safer for pedestrians, and more reliable for bus service.
These improvements are already delivering benefits along four major corridors: Durant Avenue, International Boulevard, MacArthur Boulevard, and Park Street. Together, they demonstrate how strategic partnerships, and targeted investments can improve the daily experience for riders while making better use of public infrastructure.
