How to Ride

Tempo Bus

Before You Board

Always use crosswalks, pedestrian walk signals, and designated access points to access Tempo stations. When you arrive at a station, digital message signs at each station provide ACT RealTime information so you always know when the next bus is coming. Press the button on the pole near the digital message sign to play an audio version of the active messages.

While you are at the station, please don’t smoke, vape, eat, drink, bike, skate, skateboard, or scooter. We need your help to keep everyone safe and to keep stations at their best for our community. We appreciate your assistance!

Make sure to pay at the station before you board the bus! There is no option to pay on the bus. Tempo Platform Agents can help you navigate the new service and answer any questions you have.

Boarding and Exiting the Bus

Tempo stations are at the same level as the bus floor to ease the boarding experience for riders with mobility devices, bikes, strollers, and carts, as well as seniors and people with disabilities.

Multi-door boarding minimizes crowding. To further ease the boarding process, some doors are designed for certain riders. Here are the details on where you should board:

Middle doors: Riders with mobility devices or who require priority seating should board here; other riders are welcome to board after these riders.

Rear doors: Riders with bikes and strollers should board here; other riders are welcome to board here as well.

Front door: The front door will only be used in an emergency. For boarding during regular service, please use the middle and rear doors.

Bikes can be rolled on board and right into a bike rack inside the bus. These bike racks can accommodate up to three bikes. Please secure your bike in the rack. If the space is full, please wait for the next bus. AC Transit is not responsible for loss or damage to bikes.

If you are bringing a stroller on the bus, please read our full stroller policy.

When you’re at the station, avoid getting close to the edge of the station and always wait behind the yellow warning strip. As always, wait for the bus to come to a complete stop and allow other riders to get off before boarding the bus. If someone near you is boarding with a mobility device, please allow them to board first. If someone near you is bringing a bike or stroller on board, try to allow extra room for them to wheel these items on board and secure them as necessary.

When you’re on the bus, enjoy your ride! Tempo buses stop at every station along the line. Dedicated stop request buttons are available to let the bus operator know that someone with a bike or mobility device needs to exit the bus and may need extra time. As the bus approaches your stop, make sure you’ve gathered all your belongings and are prepared to start moving toward the exit once the bus comes to a complete stop. Once the bus comes to a complete stop, exit the bus through one of the open doors.
